Abstract

This study aims to determine the form of modeling changes in the earth's surface cover and the effectiveness of modeling practicum on the mastery of concepts of Class X SMA students on the topic of environmental change. The method used in this research is Experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The subjects in this study were high school class X students at SMA Negeri 2 Palembang as many as 43 students. This study used instruments in the form of validation sheets for modeling changes in the earth's surface cover for validators, student concept mastery questionnaires, and student response questionnaires. The results showed that the form of modeling changes in the earth's surface cover consisted of two acrylic terrariums with glass lids, two temperature sensors, two light bulbs with different wattages, one light fitting and cable, and one stative. Modeling was performed on five experimental materials, namely: (1) the surface of ice shavings; (2) the surface of humus soil; (3) the surface of soil overgrown with plants; (4) the surface of water; and (5) the surface of the roof of the house (clay tile). The modeling practicum that has been designed from modifications of previous researchers' modeling is categorized as very valid for use based on the average results of the two validators, namely 92.14 percent. The study showed a significant effect seen from the results of the analysis of pretest-posttest data changes in concept mastery of 32 perncent with an N-Gain value of 65 percent which is interpreted in the level of moderate effectiveness. This is evidenced by changes in students' initial and final concept mastery seen in the Wilcoxon test data which results in the practicum modeling changes in the earth's surface cover effectively affecting students' concept mastery, as well as effective results supported by data from students' response sheets whose results are categorized as very good.
