Abstract

Sun exposure can cause damage to the skin due to ultra violet (UV) radiation. Excessive and prolonged exposure to sunlight can damage the skin layer and can cause negative health effects Additional protection is needed to reduce the transmission of UV rays to the skin and is known as a sunscreen agent. Samak leaf (Syzygium urceolatum (Korth.) Merr. & L.M.Perry) has the potential as a sunscreen because it contains phenolic compounds that have the ability to absorb UV rays. This study aims to determine the potential of sunscreen cream extracts and fractions of samak leaves (S. urceolatum). Ethanol extract of samak leaf (F1) was obtained by maceration using 96% ethanol, followed by chlorophyll separation using vacuum liquid chromatography (KCV) and thin layer chromatography (KLT) to obtain fraction of samak leaf (F2). Testing the potential as a sunscreen is done in-vitro using UV-Vis spectrophotometry by calculating the SPF value of extracts and fractions of samak leaves with each concentration of 5%, 8%, and 10%. The results of SPF determination obtained the highest SPF value at a concentration of 10%. Preparation of sunscreen cream was carried out with a combination of emulgators such as tween 80 and lecithin. The resulting preparation was subjected to physical evaluation including organoleptic test, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesiveness, and washability. The SPF values of F1 and F2 sunscreen creams were 19.59 and 15.25, respectively. F1 showed ultra protection and F2 showed maximum protection. Furthermore, the formula stability test was carried out using the cycling test method, the best formula was declared stable with no significant pH difference, no phase separation in the cycling test, and the AUCI value obtained was >0.80 in the photostability test. Based on the data obtained, it can be concluded that samak leaf has the potential as a sunscreen.
