Abstract

Perusahaan Terbatas Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) VII Cinta Manis is a large-scale sugarcane plantation in Ogan Ilir Regency and has many workers, including women. Women workers who work at PTPN VII Cinta Manis are included in vulnerable communities because they do not have health insurance, women workers also cannot get out of the circle of poverty they experience because they do not have agricultural land that can be managed as a source of life and their livelihoods are currently dependent on PTPN VII Cinta Manis. This situation is reinforced by the COVID-19 pandemic, which worsens the socio-economic situation of women workers. The purpose of this study is to explain the economic conditions of PTPN VII Cinta Manis women workers before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the economic strategies of women workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The method used in this research is qualitative with a case study research strategy. This research uses the theory of moral economy by James Scott. The result of this study is that before the COVID-19 pandemic, women laborers were a vulnerable group because they had to compete with male laborers when working on plantations. Small wages and a poor wage system made laborers economically unprofitable. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic life of women laborers worsened, such as being laid off for 3 months and no income, family members who began to be laid off, and expensive basic food prices. However, women workers did not continue to be down in this situation, women workers created various economic strategies from utilizing their skills, selling at home and utilizing social media to catfish farming to survive during the COVID-19 pandemic.
