Abstract

The objective of this research was to discover the most effective duration and concentration of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) 6000 for enhancing the viability and vigor of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) that have already deteriorated. This study was conducted at Seed Technology Laboratory of Sriwijaya University, Indralaya, from April to May 2022. A completely randomized design (CRD) was employed with 7 treatments, P0: control, P1: PEG 5.0% (8 hours of soaking), P2: PEG 7.5% (8 hours of soaking), P3: PEG 10% (8 hours of soaking), P4: PEG 5.0% (12 hours of soaking), P5: PEG 7.5% (12 hours of soaking), P6: PEG 10% (12 hours of soaking), 3 replicates of 50 seeds were used in this study. The soaking treatment in PEG 6000 did not result in a significant improvement in seed viability and vigor. However, there was an increase in each observed parameter compared to the control. Seeds that are soaked for an extended period may experience anoxia (loss of oxygen), thus the germination rate became slow. High concentrations of PEG can reduce seed viability and vigor. A high concentration of PEG can have an adverse effect on the viability and vigor of seeds. PEG has the characteristic of easily binding water, which at high concentrations causes the water potential value around the seed becomes increasingly negative, thereby making it increasingly difficult for the seed to absorb water.
