Abstract

Cerithidea quadrata (suction snail) is a gastropod species from the Sungsang coastal area and is a marine biota that has potentially toxic secondary metabolite compounds. The presence of this species in the Sungsang coastal area is quite dominant compared to other species so that it has great potential to be utilised as a medicinal material. The research was conducted to analyse the toxicity level of Cerithidea quadrata meat extract using 2 solvents with different polarity levels, namely ethyl acetate and methanol, and to analyse the phytochemical components based on the strongest toxicity level. This research was conducted from April to June 2024. Cerithidea quadrata samples were taken from the coastal area of Sungsang, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatera. Samples were taken through purposive sampling, followed by sample preparation, maceration, and extraction of active compounds. Furthermore, the samples were tested for toxicity using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method to evaluate toxicity based on the LC50 value and qualitatively analysed for phytochemicals. Based on the toxicity test results, both showed different toxic categories, with LC50 values of ethyl acetate extract 2603.15 µg/mL (non-toxic) and methanol extract 180.28 µg/mL (moderately toxic). Furthermore, the results of the phytochemical test of methanol extract contain alkaloids, triterpenoids, saponins. The difference in toxicity levels of ethyl acetate and methanol extracts is due to the nature of secondary metabolite compounds that tend to be polar, so that the LC50 value of methanol extracts is stronger than ethyl acetate extracts.
