Abstract
Kecombrang flower (Etlingera elatior) are plant from the Zingiberaceae family which has potential as an antioxidant. Kecombrang flowers have a distinctive smell and sour taste. The orally dissolving film (ODF) formulation which uses a combination of HPMC polymer and maltodextrin was able to eliminate the unpleasant taste of kecombrang flowers. Orally dissolving film (ODF) preparations was made with varying concentrations of kecombrang flower ethanol extract, respectively 125 mg, 150 mg and 175 mg. ODF preparation method in this study utilize use the solvent casting method. The ethanol extract of kecombarang flowers was subjected to a phytochemical screening test, characterization and total flavonoid test. This research aims to determine the best formulation from the results of organoleptic evaluation, film weight, folding resistance, pH of the preparation, disintegration time, percent elongation, film thickness and percentage of moisture loss. The best ODF formula was tested for uniformity of levels and antioxidant test using the DPPH method. The research results showed that kecombrang flowers contain flavonoids, saponins, tannins and terpenoids and a total flavonoid content was obtained with a value of 7.700%. Variations in the concentration of kecombrang flower ethanol extract in the ODF preparation had a significant effect (p<0.05). The best formula obtained was formulation 2 which had a film weight of 0.049 g, crease resistance of 439, pH of 4.44, disintegration time of 27 seconds, elongation percentage of 36.78 % film thickness of 0.06 mm, percentage of moisture loss 3.29%. Antioxidant activity testing was carried out on the best formulation (F2) which had an IC50 value of 3300.13 ppm. The conclusion of this research is that the ODF ethanol extract of kecombrang flowers produces very weak antioxidant activity when compared to vitamin C. Therefore, further testing is needed to increase the antioxidant effectiveness of ODF preparations and ensure their safety for in-vivo use.
