Abstract

Background : People with mental illness often get stigma from their society. Medical students as one of the future doctors are expected not to have stigma towards people with mental illness. This study aims to determine the differences of knowledge, attitude and perception among medical students in Sriwijaya University about mental illness. Method : This is analytical observational research with cross-sectional design using primary data with questionnaire from MC-KOMIT (Multiple Choice-Knowledge of Mental Illness Test), CAMI (Community Attitude toward Mental Illness) and MICA- 2 (Mental Illness Clinician’s Attitude version 2). Result : Out of 241 respondents divided into 2 groups, the one who already got psychiatry’s lesson and the other one who have not got psychiatry’s lesson. The analysis result using Chi Square showed that knowledge and authoritarianism have significant difference within 2 groups (p = 0.000, p = 0.006). While benevolence, social restrictiveness, community mental health ideology and perception doesn’t have significant difference within 2 groups ( p = 0.984, p = 0.683, p = 0.497). Conclusion: There is a significant difference between knowledge and authoritarianism among medical student in Sriwijaya University
