Abstract
Globally, tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem, especially in developing countries, where the increasing number of untreated TB patients can lead to higher mortality rates. The rising prevalence of diabetes is a factor of increasing focus in the context of the increased risk of TB infection and treatment failure. This study aimed to investigate the impact of diabetes mellitus on TB treatment outcomes in Asia. A systematic review and meta-analysis methodology was employed. In the meta-analysis, pooled analysis, subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias test were performed using RevMan 5.3 software. A Literature search yielded 24 studies that were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled analysis results showed a significant effect and a 1.30fold increased risk of diabetes mellitus on unfavorable or failed TB treatment outcomes in Asia (OR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.11-1.52). Subgroup analysis results in the age group >18 years showed a 1.87-fold increased risk of treatment failure in TBDM patients (OR:1.87; 95% CI: 0.97-3.60). The meta-analysis results, which concluded that diabetes has an impact on TB treatment failure in Asia, highlight the need for further interventions such as healthy lifestyle changes to manage diabetes in TB patients as a factor influencing TB treatment outcomes in Asia and for better TB-DM treatment guidelines, especially in countries with a high TB burden.
