Abstract

Noise and industry are inseparable because almost all production processes involve the use of tools or machines that produce sound intensity to noise in the work environment. Noise intensity that exceeds the threshold value can potentially have a non-auditory impact, namely fatigue. This study aims to determine the relationship between noise and fatigue in workers in the Chip Handling section of PT Tanjungenim Lestari Pulp and Paper Muara Enim Regency. This research is a quantitative study that uses a cross sectional approach. The sample in this study was 89 workers using total sampling technique. Measurement of noise intensity was measured using a Noise Dosimeter and work fatigue using the Subjective Self Rating Test (SSRT) questionnaire from the Japanese IFRC. Data were analyzed univariately, bivariately, and multivariately using chi-square test and multiple logistic regression test. The results showed that 4 out of 8 Similar Exposure Group (SEG) or 51.7% were exposed to noise above the threshold value and 55.1% experienced moderate fatigue. The results of bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between noise, temperature, age, tenure, and workload with fatigue. Meanwhile, there was no relationship between nutritional status, medical history, and marital status with fatigue. In the multivariate analysis, there is a significant relationship between noise and occupational fatigue after controlling for the variables of temperature, age, tenure, workload, and medical history, where workers exposed to noise above the threshold value potentially have a 7.5 times greater risk of experiencing occupational fatigue. Therefore, the company is advised to maintain and provide barriers on tools or machines and reinforce the regulations on the use of Ear Protection Equipment (APT). Workers are also advised to stretch their muscles, fulfill their nutritional and fluid needs, and maximize the use of rest time as an effort to prevent fatigue.
