Abstract

The increase in fuel prices is due to the reduction in crude oil supply and the rise in demand. One solution to reduce fuel consumption is to use HHO gas as an additional energy source. HHO gas is produced through the electrolysis of water using an HHO generator. Electrolysis is the process of passing electricity through water (H2O) via electrodes. This study aims to analyze the performance impact of a 4-stroke engine using Pertamax fuel with an additional HHO generator, comparing different electrode types: aluminum and stainless steel. The performance parameters with Pertamax fuel + HHO gas using the aluminum electrode generator showed the highest performance values, including torque of 6.971 Nm, power of 3.283 kW, and thermal efficiency of 29.50% at 4500 rpm. The Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) with Pertamax fuel + HHO gas and the aluminum electrode was the lowest at 0.2727 kg/kWh at 4500 rpm. The study concludes that the aluminum electrode generator provides better efficiency compared to the stainless steel one.
