Abstract

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a type of compressive neuropathy caused by excessive pressure on the median nerve. It is the most commonly encountered compressive neuropathy, with initial symptoms including pain and numbness in the wrist area where the median nerve is located. This study aims to identify factors associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) symptoms, categorized into individual and occupational factors. This is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The sample was obtained using accidental sampling technique, comprising 77 ojek drivers around the Indralaya Campus of Sriwijaya University. The variables studied include medical history, smoking habits, repetitive movements, awkward postures, and duration of work. Data were analyzed using statistical software with chi-square tests. The results showed that 46 respondents had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) symptoms while 31 did not. There was a significant association between medical history (p-value = 0.002), repetitive movements (p-value = 0.001), awkward postures (p-value = 0.000), and duration of work (p-value = 0.009) with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) symptoms. There is no significant association between smoking habits (p – value = 0.080) with symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Recommendations include increasing awareness of personal health among drivers and providing special attention from both health services and the university administration. Keywords : Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, ojek drivers, duration of work Literature : 80 (2014 – 2023)
