Abstract

Composite materials consist of two or more different materials combined, with the matrix serving as the base material and the reinforcement strengthening the matrix. This study explores the fabrication of composite materials using an aluminum matrix reinforced with graphite and fly ash through powder metallurgy. The goal is to analyze density, porosity, and hardness using the Vickers method, as well as microstructure using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Four composite specimens with different volume fractions were used: Aluminum : Graphite : Fly Ash (87.5% : 2.5% : 10%), (87.5% : 5% : 7.5%), (87.5% : 7.5% : 2.5%) and (87.5% : 10% : 2.5%). After powder mixing, compaction, and sintering, the test results showed that increasing the graphite fraction decreased the material's density. The composition with 2.5% graphite and 10% fly ash resulted in the highest density (2.44145 g/cm³). Porosity increased with higher graphite fractions, reaching the highest value of 15.0058% at 10% graphite and 2.5% fly ash. The best hardness was achieved with 2.5% graphite and 10% fly ash, with a value of 41.6981 HVN. Microstructure analysis showed good particle distribution with increased porosity as graphite content increased. The variation in graphite and fly ash volume fractions significantly influenced the composite's density and porosity, as well as material hardness. SEM revealed particle distribution and porosity within the composite, correlating with density and hardness test results.
