Abstract

Traditional markets are one of the public places utilized by the public for trading activity and it could be a place for the spread of disease if the sanitation is overlooked. The purpose of this study is to analyse the implementation of environmental sanitation in Bukit Kecil Market which covers sanitation facilities, building, infrastructure, and personal hygiene. The method of this study is descriptive study with qualitative approach and data-collecting with in-depth interview, observation, and measurement. The sampling technique was done with purposive sampling which resulted in 10 informants as samples. Data analysis was carried out by data reduction and interpretation of narrated data. The study finds that the sanitation conditions of Bukit Kecil Market do not meet the requirements because it does not reach the percentage of 70% of the total assessment, namely only 67,9%. Sanitation facilities are quite good with components for controlling vectors and disease-carrying animals that are still lacking. The building is quite good with the condition of office room and construction still lacking. The facilities and infrastructure are not good enough because there are only prayer room and fire control facilities. The personal hygiene implemented by merchants and workers, visitors, and managers is overall good. Concluded from the study is that there are still components that do not meet the requirements such as vector and disease-carrying animal control, office room, construction, and infrastructure that have not yet been found in Bukit Kecil Market. The findings of this study suggest that managers carry out water quality testing and vector controlling, revitalize the market, and add infrastructure to increase market safety.
