Abstract

This study examined the effect of competence and work motivation on employee performance after a mutation at PT PLN (Persero) UIK SBS. The research employed a quantitative approach with a census method, involving all 149 employees in 2023 as the sample. Data were collected through a questionnaire encompassing dimensions of motives, traits, self-concept, knowledge, and skills for competence; needs for achievement, affiliation, and power for work motivation; and quality, quantity, effectiveness, independence, and timeliness for employee performance. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to test the research hypotheses. The results indicated that competence (X1) and work motivation (X2) had a positive and significant effect on employee performance (Y). The regression coefficient for competence was 0.411 (p < 0.05), suggesting that every one-unit increase in competence would lead to a 0.411-unit increase in employee performance, assuming work motivation remained constant. The regression coefficient for work motivation was 0.456 (p < 0.05), indicating that every one-unit increase in work motivation would lead to a 0.456-unit increase in employee performance, assuming competence remained constant. The regression model explained 59.7% of the variance in employee performance. These findings have important implications for PT PLN (Persero) UIK SBS management. The company is advised to develop a comprehensive training program to enhance employee competence, particularly after mutations. This training should include the development of technical skills, adaptability to change, and leadership capabilities. Additionally, the company needs to create a supportive and motivating work environment, provide opportunities for employees to participate in decision-making, and offer opportunities for career advancement and positive feedback.
