Abstract

The Sawahtambang Formation has outcrops of stacked and cross-channeled sandstones, very thick sandstones are very interesting to study with the aim of knowing the characteristics of sandstones, the origin of sediments, deciphering mineral composition, knowing the rock of origin and ancient deposits of the source area formed. The method used in the research is petrographic description based on data analysis of direct appearance of rock outcrops and then naming the rock of origin using a modified classification diagram Zhang et al (2016) previously made by Dickinson and Suczek (1979) by looking at the composition of quartz (Q), feldspar (F), and rock fragments (L). Based on the results of the Dickinson and Suczek (1979) diagram seen from the Qt-F-L content, the Sawahtambang Formation sandstones are derived from Recycled Orogen. Based on the Qm-F-Lt diagram, it shows that the samples are in Mixed and Transitional Recycled. This indicates that the rock originates from metasediments with a quartz mineral composition that is more dominant than feldspar and lithic minerals. Furthermore, on the Qp-Lv-Ls diagram the sandstones of the Sawahtambang Formation come from Collision Suture and Fold-Thrusted Sources. Based on the Qm-P-K diagram, the sandstones of the Sawahtambang Formation have experienced increased maturity or stability from Continental Block Provenance. The tectonic setting of the sandstones of the Sawahtambang Formation is sourced from the Transitional Arc zone derived from the trough depositional system, intra-arc fore-arc and back-arc characterized by the presence of weathered plutonic material in small to moderate amounts but the main source is still volcanic material characterized by high to moderate quartz content and the Recycled Orogen zone which is a collision area, The Recycled Orogen zone is a collision area, where collision occurs which causes the area of origin along the collision belt to experience uplift followed by folding and incision so that the detritus of the original rock comes from sediments or metasediments with a quartz mineral composition that is more dominant than feldspar minerals. Transitional Arc originates from trough, fore-arc, intra-arc and back-arc depositional systems characterized by the presence of weathered plutonic material in small to moderate amounts but the main source is still volcanic material characterized by high to moderate quartz content. Recycled Orogen is an area of collision, where there is a collision that causes the area of origin along the collision belt to experience uplift followed by folding and incision so that the detritus of the original rock comes from sediments or metasediments with a quartz mineral composition that is more dominant than feldspar minerals.
