Abstract

The survival of cardiac arrest victims is influenced by bystanders in providing assistance. Teenagers are common people who are likely to become bystanders of cardiac arrest victims. The phenomenon found is the low intention of adolescents to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on victims of cardiac arrest. Behavioral theory, theory of planned behavior, is widely used to identify intention or willingness to behave which consists of attitudinal factors, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors associated with adolescents' intention to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation with the theory of planned behavior approach. The method used in this research was quantitative with a cross sectional study design. The sample was chosen by using probability sampling, particularly stratified random sampling, with a sample of 91 respondents. The results of the Spearman's rho test showed that there was a significant relationship between attitude and intention, p = 0.002 (p <0.05) with a correlation coefficient of 0.462. There was a significant relationship between subjective norms and intention, p = 0.000 (p <0.05) with a correlation coefficient of 0.396. There was a significant relationship between perceived behavioral control and intention, p = 0.000 (p <0.05) with a correlation coefficient of 0.663. Theory of planned behavior can be a suitable theoretical basis for identifying adolescents' intention to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on cardiac arrest victims outside the hospital.
