Abstract

The main target of farmers as the main actors in the agricultural economy is the economic elite, especially those who act as providers of all necessities to support agricultural activities and those who act as intermediaries in marketing their agricultural productivity to consumers. On this basis, farmers build relationships with economic elites who influence their agricultural activities. The main focus of this study is to determine the form of power relations between coffee farmers and economic elites in Sindang Panjang Village, as well as the strategies used by coffee farmers to maintain these power relations. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data collection techniques in this study were carried out through observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. This study was analyzed using Michel Foucault's theory of power relations. Based on the results of the analysis and research, it was found that the power relations between coffee farmers and economic elites in Sindang Panjang Village have given rise to an associative social relation pattern in the form of cooperation between them. This cooperation consists of three forms, namely mutual cooperation, bargaining cooperation and cooptation cooperation. The strategies used by coffee farmers to maintain power relations with the economic elite are as follows. First, coffee farmers always provide the resources needed by the economic elite. Second, using empathetic communication. Third, using dialogue as a cultural approach. Fourth, building trust by being consistent in both actions and words.
