Abstract

The methods of excavation currently performed at the PT. MME are free digging and ripping. Technical studies carried out to determine whether the overburden material excavated is actually free digging and ripping, according to the characteristics of the overburden mass and the digging force capabilities of excavator have not been investigated. This study is based on observation in the field, when excavation is carried out using excavator digging tools, it is seen that there are materials that are easy to dig (direct digging) and some are difficult to dig with the direct digging method. This indication of easy and difficult digging can be seen from the different cycle time units when digging. The category of material that is difficult to dig has a greater cycle time value when compared to the category of material that is easy to dig using the same digging and loading equipment. Further influence of digging force and mechanical characteristics of rocks on loading and unloading equipment is on the productivity that decreases if the excavation method is not appropriate and also related to the performance of units namely PA, MA, UA, and EU. After the research, it is found if the material excavated by the excavators EX1250 and EX900 is siltstone material with uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of 0.67 MPa. Whereas according to the specification, the digging power value of each device is 0.60 Mpa for EX1250, and 0.48 Mpa to EX900, is below the UCS value of silt stone material. This probem cause a deviation in the productivity value of excavators. On the EX1250 unit, the productivity with direct digging method (512.52 Bcm/h) is lower compared to the ripping material excavation method (552.67 BCM/h), which is 40.15 Bcm /h. As for the EX900, the productivity with direct Digging method is 42.77 BCM /h, whereas the production with ripping materials excavations method is 471.77 Bcm per hour, there is a deviation of 50.99 BCM per hour. In addition, direct digging methods using EX1250 and EX900 units on siltstone materials, potentially reducing mechanical performance and utilization on excavators.
