Abstract

This research aims to design and build a vertical-axis wind turbine with 2-blade and 4-blade configurations using a variety of PVC, polyfoam, and aluminum materials. The use of wind turbines as a renewable energy source is increasingly important given the rising price of fossil fuels and the negative environmental impact of their use. The Indonesian government has set a target to achieve 23% of energy consumption from renewable energy sources by 2025. The methodology of this research includes the design, construction, and testing of wind turbines in the open area of Sriwijaya University. The test was carried out to measure the output power of turbines with different variations of blade materials. The data is then analyzed to determine the most efficient blade material for generating electrical power. The results show that wind turbines with 4 blades produce higher power compared to 2-blade turbines. Among the three materials tested, aluminum made the highest output power, followed by PVC, and polyfoam. These findings contribute to the development of more efficient and applicable wind turbine technology to meet the needs of renewable energy in Indonesia. The research is expected to provide insights for further growth in the design and use of materials for wind turbines, as well as support global efforts to reduce reliance on fossil energy sources and reduce negative environmental impacts.
