Abstract

Background: Acute respiratory infection is a disease that can disrupt the quality of life which can lead death. Actually, acute respiratory infection can be treated without using antibiotics. However, there has been a considerable of severity that needs antibiotic therapy. Cotrimoxazole is one of the antibiotics that can be used to treat acute respiratory infection. This research aim was to know the rational of the use of cotrimoxazole antibiotics at Dempo Health Center Palembang. Methods: Drug utilization study has been conducted. The research data was a prescription that was took from Dempo Health Center Palembang for 3 months. There were 42 respondents who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Descriptive analysis is done manually. Results: Of the 42 prescription studied, 16 men and 26 women were obtained. In most men and women, this disease commonly happens at age 30-40 years old, men (31.25%) and women (34.6%). Daily dose that primarily used are 960 mg/day with a frequency of twice a day. The most commonly used combination are cotrimoxazole with CTM (30.9%) Conclusion: In terms of dose and frequency the use of cotrimoxazole antibiotics at Dempo Health Center Palembang has been rational. However, the duration does not meet the rational standard.
