Abstract

Background: Short-term memory is a chemical process between neurons in processing and storing information in a small and short duration. Memorizing the Qur'an can induce neuroplasticity through the Long-term Potentiation (LTP) mechanism, thus strengthening synaptic connections that will implement in increasing memory acuity and brain intelligence. This study aims to determine relationship between Qur’an memorization and short-term memory of students of Zain Al-Mutaqqin Integrated Islamic Junior High School Palembang. Methods: This analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted using a sample of students of Zain Al-Mutaqqin Integrated Islamic Junior High School Palembang which fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Results: A total of 40 samples consisted of 19 male students (47.5%) and 21 female students (52.5%) with the highest proportion of the number of Al-Qur'an memorization between 1-4 juz (55%). While the proportion of Forward DST scores is mostly in the good category, which is scored ≥7 (70%). Statistical analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test and found a significant relationship between the number of Al-Qur'an memorization and short-term memory performance with a significance value of 0.002 (p <0.05). In contrast, there was no statistically significant relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and forward DST score. Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between the amount of Al-Qur'an memorization and short-term memory. In contrast, the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and short-term memory is not statistically significantly related.
