Abstract

This research examines the tradition of giving pawn and dowry in traditional marriages in Epil village, Lais district, Musi Banyuasin regency. The purpose of this study is to understand the tradition of giving pawn and dowry, identify the forms of pawn and dowry, and comprehend the meaning of giving pawn and dowry in marriages in Epil village. This research adopts a qualitative approach using phenomenology as the method. Data collection involves observation techniques, interviews, and documentary studies. The analysis of the research is conducted using Marcel Mauss’ theory of resiprocity. The results of this study indicate a relationship between the giving of pawn and dowry with reciprocal equivalence, emphasizing equal, direct, and scheduled giving and returning.
