Abstract

Background: The golden age, also known as the “first thousand days of life”, begins in the womb and lasts until the child is two years old. If the child’s body does not grow according to age expectations, this is a warning sign of poor child development due to the accumulation of poor health factors during pregnancy and two years after birth. The stunting growth rate in Indonesia over the past five years is among the highest in the world at more than 30%. Researchers analyzed behavioral determinants of stunting incidence in 1000 HPK in rural and urban areas in Indonesia based on 2018 Riskesdas data. Method: This study is a cross-sectional study, in determining the sample using the Probability Proportional to Size (PPS) method using Linear Systematic Sampling with Two Stage Sampling. Sampling with a non-random method because this study used the entire population of toddlers aged 12-23 months in Indonesia in Riskesdas who met the criteria determined by the researcher, which obtained 6,082 respondents, the instrument used the 2018 Riskesdas questionnaire. Results: Showed 31.04% experienced stunting, significant results on the variables BBL <2500 grams (p-value = 0.000, OR = 1.92 95% CI: 1.38-2.68), maternal education (p-value = 0.000, OR = 1.44 95% CI: 1.19-1.74), child gender (p-value = 0.011, OR = 1.23 95% CI: 1.05-1.45), history of IMD (p-value = 0.020, OR = 1.28 95% CI: 1.04-1.56), and father's education (p-value=0.028, OR=1.24 95%CI:1.02-1.51). Children in rural areas are more susceptible to stunting than in urban areas. Further research is needed by considering variables of access to health services, home environment, per capita income, and socio-culture so that they can answer the challenges in improving the growth and development of Indonesian children.
