Abstract
Senjang is an oral tradition and art form from Musi Banyuasin, characterized by the use of rhythm in reciting verses and possessing deep cultural significance. This study aims to uncover the symbolic meanings embedded in the Senjang oral tradition through the semiotic approach of Charles Sanders Peirce, supported by the theory of symbolic interactionism. The Senjang oral tradition serves not only as a form of entertainment but also as a medium of social communication rich in the cultural and moral values of the Sekayu community. This research employs a qualitative method to analyze various signs that appear in Senjang texts, which are interpreted as symbols of social norms and moral messages. The analysis results indicate that Senjang conveys important messages about politeness, respect, and social norms, which form the foundation of community life. The symbols in Senjang also reflect the dynamics of social relationships and the ways the community maintains harmony and solidarity. Furthermore, this study finds that Senjang plays a significant role in fostering interaction between the pesejang (performers of Senjang) and the audience, where the meaning of the performance can change according to the social context and the event's situation. The study concludes that the Senjang oral tradition holds strong relevance in contemporary cultural contexts, serving as a mirror for the community to understand and preserve their cultural identity amidst the flow of globalization.
