Abstract

Intercultural communication is the process of exchanging messages between individuals from various cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, socio-economic statuses, and a mix of other characteristics. Batak students at Sriwijaya University, who typically have a communication style characterized by high intonation, boldness, and minimal small talk, need to adjust their communication style when interacting with the Palembang community. This study aims to reveal how Batak students accommodate their communication to the Palembang culture. This research employs the communication accommodation theory. The informants of this study are Batak students and native Palembang students at Sriwijaya University. The results of the study indicate that in the interactions between Batak and Palembang students, three forms of communication accommodation emerge: convergent, divergent, and over-accommodation. Batak students engage in convergent accommodation by understanding and imitating the host's communication style, including intonation, tone, dialect, and accent. From the observations, the researcher found instances of over-accommodation by three informants who frequently used the Palembang language despite not being fluent, which seemed overly forced. However, divergent accommodation still appears in the form of using Indonesian with a Batak accent, and occasionally, some informants use the Batak language when communicating with the Palembang community around them.
