Abstract

Biomass-fueled boilers are an effective and efficient alternative for sterilizing oyster mushroom baglogs. The use of biomass fuel is not only environmentally friendly but also provides good performance in terms of energy efficiency and quality of sterilization results. This study aims to analyze the performance of boilers using gelam wood and coconut shell fuels. This study will be conducted from May to July 2024 in Payakabung Village, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra Province. The method used in this study is the Descriptive method. The parameters observed in this study were temperature and pressure, steam production capacity, fuel consumption, equipment performance efficiency and specific fuel cost efficiency. Boilers using coconut shell fuel have a steam capacity of 7,206 kg/hour. Steam temperature and pressure are 120 °C to 180 °C and steam pressure between 7 and 25 bar. Coconut shell fuel consumption only reaches 1730 kg/hour, while firewood fuel consumption reaches 19605 kg/hour. The thermal efficiency of coconut shell is about 59% and the boiler fuel cost is Rp0.15/kJ. Boilers using firewood have a working capacity of about 27.6 kg/hour, and coconut shells are only about 33.5 kg/hour.
