Abstract

This research aims to discuss the concept of nrimo described by Pariyem in the novel Pengakuan Pariyem by Linus Suryadi. The concept of nrimo is one of the values found in Javanese culture. The concept of nrimo means a way of viewing one’s life as a gift from God that must be appreciated and grateful. The purpose of this study is to describe the meaning of the concept of nrimo of Javanese women portrayed by Pariyem in the novel Pengakuan Pariyem. The research method used is descriptive qualitative using Teun A. Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis method which consists of three elements, namely text, social cognition, and social context. The data analysis technique used is a macro-structure analysis technique that includes the global meaning in the novel. The results show that in the text dimension, Pariyem applies the concept of nrimo in herself as a guideline in living her life. Pariyem lives life with sincerity, patience, and fortitude despite the many tests and trials that life throws at her. In the social cognition dimension, Linus Suryadi sees social and cultural realities which he then describes in the figure of Pariyem with an innocent and innocent character and in a Javanese culture that is still thick. Finally, the social context dimension concludes that the discourse that develops in society is about the simplicity of life taught by Pariyem and how to deal with problems in life wisely. As a woman of Javanese descent, Pariyem always remembers and always applies the teachings of her ancestors amid the emergence of modernization which causes social change. By instilling the concept of nrimo in Pariyem, a wiser mindset, sincerity in living life, and accepting all trials of life with patience and calmness are formed. The novel also tells of the existence of traditional forms and cultural shifts due to social change and modernization.
