Abstract

Background: Each individual facial skin type differs and one approach for skin type classification is the usage of BSTI which utilizes 4 parameters. Dermatological parameters which affects skin type include sebum levels, corneum stratum water content, TEWL and melanin. There were no previous similar studies regarding the correlation between dermatological parameters and skin type. Aim: To determine the correlation between dermatological parameters with skin types of Palembang residents based on the BSTI questionnaire. Methods: An observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted at the Cosmetic and Aesthetic Dermatology Clinic of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang, from March to July 2024. A total of 150 people who lived in Palembang based on their identity cards and met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited as samples. The study samples were collected using a cluster sampling technique and filled out the BSTI questionnaire. Dermatological parameters examined included sebum levels, stratum corneum water content, TEWL and melanin using Courage+Khazaka Electronic GmbH. Results: This study showed that a majority of Palembang residents has oily (54,7%), resistant (56%), pigmented (61,3%) and wrinkle (55,3%) skin. Based on a more specific classification, the three most common skin type out of 16 categories were dry, resistant, pigmented, wrinkle (DRPW) 16%; oily, resistant, non- pigmented, tight (ORNT) 12%; and dry, sensitive, pigmented, wrinkle (DSPW) 10%. Sebum levels and oily or dry skin types have a significant correlation (p = 0.033). Melanin levels have a significant correlation between sensitive or resistant skin types (p = 0.006); pigmented or non-pigmented skin types (p = 0.046); and wrinkled or tight skin types (p = 0.006). Melanin levels ≥ 286 mg / mg (p = 0.034) are the parameters that play the most role in pigmented skin types. Conclusion: Dermatological parameters, sebum and melanin levels, have a significant correlation with the skin type of the Palembang residents based on the BSTI questionnaire.
