Abstract

The phenomenon of increasing prevalence of smoking among young women, especially female students, raises serious concerns considering its negative impacts on health. This study aims to identify and analyze cognitive dissonance experienced by female smokers. The focus of this study is on female Communication Science students at Sriwijaya University who actively smoke and experience cognitive dissonance related to their smoking habits. This study uses Leon Festinger's 1957 Cognitive Dissonance Theory which explores sources of dissonance such as logical inconsistencies, social norms, cultural values, and past experiences as well as their ways of reducing dissonance such as adding supporting elements, changing environmental cognitions, and changing behavioral elements. The results showed that the informants experienced significant cognitive dissonance when they saw scary picture messages on cigarette packaging. They are aware of the health hazards of smoking but continue to smoke due to factors such as dependence, coping mechanisms for stress, and social influence. These scary picture warnings cause feelings of fear and anxiety about their future health, which often motivate them to reduce or quit smoking. However, dependence and ingrained smoking habits make it difficult for them to quit completely. Keywords: cognitive dissonance, female smokers, scary picture messages, cigarette packaging
