Abstract

ABSTRACT MATERNAL SERUM MAGNESIUM AND CRP IN PRETERM LABOR; THEIR RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE PREGNANCY OUTCOMES IN DR. MOHAMMAD HOESIN HOSPITAL PALEMBANG Preterm labor is related with increased perinatal mortality and morbidity. Magnesium deficiency increases inflamamtory response and proinflammatory cytokines and CRP secretions. Maternal magnesium deficiency ranges between 34-78.9%; meanwhile, inflammation becomes one of the risk factors of preterm labor. This study aims to measure correlations between maternal magnesium and CRP and pregnancy outcomes. This study was a cross-sectiional study in Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang involving 71 subjects underwent labor. Serum magnesium and CRP concentrations were measured in the institutional laboratory. Gestation age, APGAR score, and birth weights measurements were obtained through history, physical examinations, and ultrasonographic examinations. Average age of the subjects were 27.2 ± 5.96 years, with average magnesium concentrations were 1.87 ± 0.62 mg/dL and median CRP concentrations were 8.26 (1-91.4) mg/L. Average gestational age at births were 35.54 ± 4.3 weeks; average birthweights were 2488.04 ± 828.71 gram; and median APGAR scores were 9 (0-9). Correlation between serum magnesium and CRP was 0.164 (p = 0.163); with gestation age was -0.474 (p < 0,001); with birthweight was -0.481 (p < 0.001); and with the highest APGAR score was -0.25 (p = 0.032). correlations between CRP and gestation age was -0.271 (p = 0.019); with birth weight was -0.285 (p = 0.014); and with the highest APGAR was -0.263 (p = 0.024). No. correlations between serum magnesium and serum CRP concentrations were observed, but significant negative correlations between serum magnesium and gestation age, birth weights, and highest APGAR score were observed. This study found significant negative correlations between serum CRP concentrations and gestation age, birth weights, and highest APGAR scores.. Keywords: magnesium, CRP, pregnancy outcomes
