Abstract

The research was conducted in the Batang Manyuruk Area and its surroundings in Talawi District, Sawahlunto Regency, West Sumatra. Regionally, this area is included in the Ombilin Basin which is a pull apart basin resulting from a duplex tensional or transtensional system along the strike slip fault segment. The study in the research area consists of diverse lithologies dominated by sedimentary rocks in the form of sandstone. In the Batang Manyuruk area, research related to diagenesis and the quality of sandstone porosity of the Sangkarewang Formation. Diagenesis is a physical, chemical and biological process that is controlled by texture, mineral composition and fluid flow properties that can be seen by petrography. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of petrography as well as the process and stage of diagenesis in the sandstone of the Sangkarewang Formation and to determine the quality of the porosity of the rocks in the study area as a good potential reservoir. The research methods used include petrographic laboratory analysis through observation of thin sections in rocks, followed by diagenesis analysis to identify the diagenesis process and rock formation environment and porosity analysis using the ImageJ application to determine the porosity percentage of rocks. Based on the results of petrographic analysis, the study area contains three types of sedimentary rocks, namely Litharenite, Sublitharenite and Lithic wacke. The diagenesis process that develops in the sandstone of the Sangkarewang Formation includes the Mesogenesis Stage and the Telogenesis Stage with a depth of 3 km to 4 km and a temperature of 90⁰C to 120⁰C at the maturity level 'A' to mature 'B'. Analysis of the porosity of sandstone in thin sections of the rock shows that the sandstone of the Sangkarewang Formation has a sufficient to very good classification with a porosity percentage between 13% to 24%. The percentage of porosity is influenced by the diagenesis phase experienced by the rock as well as well sorted rock sorting factors and the dissolution process that increases primary porosity with the type of porosity 'intergranular porosity'. The results of porosity analysis on the sandstone of the Sangkarewang Formation show that the area has good potential as a reservoir, because the sandstone is adequate and allows to store and drain fluids.
