Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the effects of fruit crops on the growth of young gambir on intercropping. The experiment was conducted in gambir field at Toman village, Babat Toman, Musi Banyuasin, from November 2003 till June 2004. Design methods of the research was randomized block design with five treatments and three replications. Each unit of treatments was gambir planted with fruits crop e. g : rambutan, mangoes, orange, papaya, and one unit of gambir as monoculture cultivated. The treatments were symbolized with : GO = monoculture gambir, G1 = gambir and rambutan, G2 = gambir and mangoes, G3 = gambir and orange, and G4 = gambir and papaya. The result of growth the young gambir planted as intercropping with fruits crop show that the treatments of various intercropping system gave the best effect to the vegetative growth of young gambir. Gambir and rambutan gave the best effect for diameter raising of main stem, leaves that ready to harvest. Intercropping gambir with rambutan gave the same relative response with the growth of gambir monoculture.
