Abstract

Water quality is crucial for maintaining kissing gourami as it supports the growth and survival of the fish. The decline in aquaculture water quality is often due to the accumulation of organic matter from feed residues and fish manure on the maintenance medium. One effective method to maintain optimal water quality is by implementing a recirculation system. Commonly used filter materials in recirculation systems include sponges, ginger corals, and activated charcoal. This study aims to determine the impact of various compositions of filter materials on water quality and to analyze their effectiveness in maintaining kissing gourami. The study was conducted at the Aquaculture Laboratory and Experimental Pond, Aquaculture Study Program, Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya. The study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of four treatments and three replicates, namely P1 (sponges, ginger corals 20 g L-1, activated charcoal 5 g L-11), P2 (sponges, ginger corals 15 g L-1, activated charcoal 10 g L-1), P3 (sponges, ginger corals 10 g L-1, activated charcoal 15 g L-1), P4 (sponges, ginger corals 5 g L-1, activated charcoal 20 g L-1). The results indicated that P4 was the most effective treatment, with an average temperature ranging from 28.8-31.8 0C, pH of 7.40-7.44, dissolved oxygen (DO) of 4.43-5.33 mg L-1, BOD5 of 1.75-1.93 mg L-1, ammonia level of 0.034-0.046 mg L-1, nitrate level of 1.64-3.61 mg L-1, TDS of 48.33-89.33 mg L-1, turbidity of 0.61-1.26 NTU, absolute length growth of 1.14 cm, absolute weight growth of 0.83 g, feed efficiency of 25.97%, and 100% survival.
