Abstract

The purpose of this research was to observe antioxidant activity and toxicity of lotus leaves extract {Nelumbo nucifera). The research was conducted from Januaiy until February 2014 at Fishery Technology Laboratory of Sriwijaya University, Agricultural Technology Laboratory of Sriwijaya University, Chemistry Laboratory MIPA of Sriwijaya University and at Fish Hatchery Hall Agency of Fisheries and Marine Ogan Ilir, Inderalaya. The research was an experimental laboratory to prove of antioxidant activity and determine the potential toxicity of lotus leaves extract. The extraction process was carried out using three different solvents namely methanol, ethyl acetate and n-hexane. The observed parameters were extraction yields phytochemical compounds (alkaloid, flavonoid and tanin), antioxidant activity using DPPH (l,l-difenil-2- pikrilhidrazil) method and toxicity using BSLT {Brine Shrimp Lethality Test) method. The results showed that the methanol extract exhibited the highest yield with a value of 0.708% and had a flavonoid tannin content of 1.161 ppm. ethyl acetate extract showed alkaloid and tanin content was 198 ppm and n-hexane extract showed akaloid and tanin content was 110 ppm. The determination of antioxidant activity for methanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane had a value IC50 respectively was 199 ppm, 1.145 ppm and 3.084 ppm. The determination of toxicity for methanol, ethyl acetate and n-hexane had a value LC50 respectively was 190 ppm, 1.091 ppm and 2.167 ppm.
