Abstract
Diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria are usually treated by giving antibiotics. Antibiotics contain chemicals or synthetics which, if used continuously, will cause pathogenic bacteria to become resistant. Soft corals Sinularia polydactila is a marine organism that has the potential as a natural material to inhibit the rate of pathogenic bacteria. The objective of this study was to determine the differences of antibacterial bioactivity of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus on the soft coral extract of Sinularia polydactila on various solvent types and compare the antibacterial activity of E. coli and S. aureus on the treatment of wet and dry samples. The study was conducted in September 2017. The extraction was performed by single and multilevel maceration on three solvents with different polarity levels (n-Hexan, Ethyl acetate and Methanol) as well as two different sample treatments (dry and wet samples). The results showed that wet samples had higher mean antibacterial inhibition zone values compared to the antibacterial inhibition zone values in dry samples. The largest inhibitory zone values were in wet sample extract with Methanol solvent in a single maceration of 12.98 ± 4.87 mm in S. auerus bacteria.
