Abstract

Diarrhea is one of the 10 most common diseases in the 7 Ulu Community Health Center, Palembang City. Diarrhea can cause dehydration, malnutrition, weight loss, weakened immune system, and can disrupt growth in toddlers. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine the relationship between the sanitary condition of the home environment and the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in the Working Area of Puskesmas 7 Ulu, Palembang City. This study was carried out with a case – control design and purposive sampling technique, with a sample of 110 consisting of 55 cases and 55 controls. The analysis in this research is univariate analysis, bivariate analysis, using chi-square, and multivariate analysis of multiple logistic regression prediction models. The samples in this study were toddlers aged 6-59 months who experienced diarrhea. The conclusion from this research is that there are variables that are related to the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers, namely drinking water sources (p-value 0.009), latrine ownership (p-value 0.002) and hand washing habits (p-value 0.002). The variables that are not related to the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers are waste water disposal facilities (p-value 1.000), waste disposal facilities (p-value 0.649), and food and drink processing (p-value 0.501). The most dominant variable in this study was hand washing habits (p-value 0.001 OR 4.496 95%CI 1.817 – 11.123). As well as suggestions for the 7 Ulu Community Health Center, Palembang City, to increase community empowerment regarding diarrhea management.
