Abstract

Background: Indonesia is currently experiencing a phase of increasing proportions of the elderly population, where health issues among the elderly are also on the rise. Issues that arise include memory disturbances. A nonpharmacological therapy (complementary) that can be implemented to enhance memory in elderly individuals with memory problems is brain exercise. Method: The method used is qualitative descriptive with a case study approach involving three elderly clients experiencing memory disturbances by applying brain exercises. Results: The main nursing diagnosis established is memory disturbance. The intervention provided is brain exercises conducted for eight days at a frequency of twice daily for 10-15 minutes each session. Analysis: After the brain exercise therapy, changes were observed, evidenced by the fulfillment of every aspect of the memory disturbance outcome criteria and a change in the status of intellectual function impairment from moderate to mild. Discussion: Based on the evaluation of brain exercise interventions in three elderly individuals, each aspect of the memory disturbance outcome criteria was met, along with changes in intellectual function impairment status. This is attributed to the dilation of blood vessels and increased heart rate during the exercises, improving blood circulation to all organs, including the brain. Enhanced blood flow rich in nutrients and oxygen allows the brain to function optimally, thereby improving short-term memory. Regular brain exercises can yield positive results in enhancing memory function among the elderly
