Abstract

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra, a mining company uses the surface mining method with dump trucks to transport coal. The condition of the haul road greatly affects the productivity of the equipment, especially during rain which causes slippery and standby time. To improve performance, PTBA maintains the road and creates All Weather Road (AWR) in several segments. In the Banko Tengah Block B IUP development area, the road segment from Pit 3 Timur, Pit E, and Pit SJS to Dump hopper 5 (DH 5) along 6 km is often disrupted due to bumpy road conditions. PTBA plans to concrete the road along 1.7 km to reduce slippery time and increase operational efficiency, while conducting a cost and benefit analysis to ensure its economic feasibility. The purpose of this study is to analyze the actual geometric conditions of the haul road from Simpang Bangjo to Dump hopper 5 (DH 5) and its coal productivity, evaluate the concreting plan of the haul road from Simpang Banjo Banko to DH 5, and conduct a benefit and cost ratio analysis arising from the concreting plan. The results of the discussion show that the existing geometry of the haul road from Simpang Bangjo Banko to Dump Hopper 5 has a length of 1.74 km, a width of 15.2–36.68 m, a cross slope of 30.4–73.36 cm, a bend radius of 10.29 m, superelevation of 16.8° and 7.2°, and a road grade of <8%, with a hauling equipment productivity of 23.81 tons/hour. The road concreting plan includes concrete construction with 0.15 m thick class A aggregate, 0.15 m thick K-200 lean mix concrete and 0.275 m thick K-550 concrete with a total strength of 61.07 MPa to withstand ground pressure of 59.18 MPa. This concreting project is estimated to generate total benefits of IDR 1.786 trillion over 5 years, which include increased coal production from productivity and reduced slippery time, reduced use of grader units, savings on diesel for motor graders and water trucks, and extension of the service life of dump truck tires. With a total project cost of IDR 28.23 billion, this project has a benefit to cost ratio (B/C) of 63, making it feasible to implement.
