Abstract

Peat development for agriculture faced with a number of problems the availability of the hara limited and its impact on the environment. The environment is apparent recently associared with the production greenhouse gases produced at clearings or land management. The agricultural sector in addition to providing a source oflife for the majority of the population is also aimed to produce more than half the emission of CH4 in Indonesia, especially the cultivation of rice plants. The emissions of greenhouse gases issued by the rice crop was primarily is methane (CH4) emissions, around 90% methane (CH4) gas is discharged through aerenkima vessels plant, but their ability to release methane (CH4) gas depends on the characteristics of different varieties of rice as physical properties, age and roots activity. The management of water system also affect crop yield rice in peat soil and influence on the scale of methane (CH4) gas emissions. Besides the management of water system, application nitrogen fertilizer on peat soil give different impact on the process of decomposing organic matter of peat. The research indicated influence of ground water level and application nitrogen fertilizer to methane (CH4) gas emissions is consistent, because the results of methane (CH4) gas emissions luminance phase of rice plant increased although influenced by the high water table and decomposition material peat due to the provision of nitrogen fertilizer, the value of methane gas emissions on the highest one of the growing seasons are in concotion phase is much as 4,18 mg CH4/plants/day, and total CH4 emissions during the period of planting is much as 2447,60 mg CH4/cropping period.
