Abstract

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is characterized by a gradual and chronic decline in kidney function. One of the major complications of CKD is hypervolemia, which is fluid retention that leads to edema, worsening the patient's condition and increasing the risk of cardiovascular complications. One of the effective nursing interventions to reduce the degree of edema in CKD patients with the nursing problem of hypervolemia is ankle pumping exercise. Objective: The aim of this case study is to apply nursing care to CKD patients by providing ankle pumping exercise interventions to reduce the degree of leg edema. Method: The method used is qualitative research with a case study approach involving 3 CKD patients, applying ankle pumping exercise therapy. Results: Five nursing problems were identified in CKD patients, with hypervolemia being the main nursing issue. The intervention provided was ankle pumping exercise, which was beneficial in reducing the degree of edema as one of the signs and symptoms of hypervolemia. The intervention was implemented over 3 days, and partial resolution of hypervolemia was achieved, with results showing reduced edema, increased urine output, improved blood pressure, improved pulse rate, and enhanced skin turgor. Conclusion: Nursing care was provided over three days, and the ankle pumping exercise intervention had a positive impact on reducing the degree of edema in all three CKD patients under care.
