Abstract

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) or chronic kidney failure is damage to the structure or function of the kidneys that lasts more than 3 months. Hypervolemia is a common problem in CKD patients. One effort that can be made to overcome hypervolemia is to control thirst. Thirst can be controlled by chewing sugarless gum (xylitol). Objective: To determine the effect of chewing sugarless gum (Xylitol) to control thirst in overcoming hypervolemia. Methods: The method used was descriptive qualitative with a case study approach on 3 CKD patients. Results: The results of the assessment showed that the nursing problem in the three patients managed was hypervolemia. The intervention given to overcome this problem is the administration of sugarless gum (Xylitol). Implementation carried out for three consecutive days resulted in the three patients experiencing a decrease in the thirst scale with the average VAS score before being given the intervention being 6 (moderate thirst) and after being given the intervention being 2 (light thirst). Discussion: Chewing gum in CKD patients has many benefits for CKD patients, namely reducing fluid intake, reducing the patient's thirst, relaxing the mind because it feels thirsty, making more saliva production and not causing excess fluid volume due to less water entering the body,can reduce edema in the extremities Conclusion: Sugarless chewing gum (Xylitol) therapy can be used as a non-pharmacological therapy to reduce thirst in CKD patients in treating hypervolemia.
