Abstract

Background: Chest pain is a common symptom of Unstable Angina Pectoris (UAP), which occurs suddenly due to a lack of oxygen supply to the heart's blood vessels. Treatment through medication has been proven effective in controlling chest pain. However, the decline in effect over time due to the drug's half-life may cause recurrent chest pain after 3 hours of administration, requiring additional interventions, such as non-pharmacological therapy with Benson relaxation. This study aims to determine the effect of Benson relaxation on chest pain levels in patients with Unstable Angina Pectoris (UAP). Method: The method used is a descriptive case study approach and journal review on patients with Unstable Angina Pectoris (UAP). Results: The application of Benson relaxation therapy for 3 consecutive days, with sessions lasting 15-30 minutes, 2-3 times a day, can reduce chest pain levels in patients with Unstable Angina Pectoris (UAP) from moderate to mild pain. Discussion: Benson relaxation involves breathing exercises combined with elements of belief, using words that align with the patient's faith. This impacts the parasympathetic nervous system's function and stimulates the release of endorphins, which influence pain impulses by suppressing neurotransmitter release at the presynaptic level, thereby minimizing sensory pain stimuli. Benson relaxation therapy can be used as a complementary therapy to manage chest pain in patients with Unstable Angina Pectoris (UAP).
