Abstract

Introduction: S. aureus is one of the most frequently found and detected microorganisms in odontogenic infections of oral and cerebral abscesses. The treatment of odontogenic infections can be treated using antibiotics, which can be replaced by honey. Tembesu bitter black honey is a natural material that can be used as an antibacterial because it has high osmolarity, low pH (3,2-4,5), low water content, high sugar content, and alkaloid, phenol, flavonoid, terpenoid, and saponin compounds that can inhibit bacterial growth. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial effect of Tembesu bitter black honey solution on S. aureus bacteria. Methods: Experimental study with post-test-only control group design. The test group used a 100% concentration of Tembesu bitter black honey solution, clindamycin as a positive control, and aquadest as a negative control. Antibacterial power testing of the disc to determine the inhibition zone. The results of the inhibition zone values were then analyzed statistically using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Kruskal Wallis test, Mann-Whitney test, and post-hoc Tukey. Results: The results showed that a 100% concentration of Tembesu bitter black honey solution had an inhibition zone diameter of 22.70 mm, but was still lower than clindamycin with an inhibition zone diameter of 36.59 mm. Conclusion: Solution Tembesu bitter black honey at a concentration of 100% had a strong antibacterial effect against the growth of S. aureus bacteria.
