Abstract
Compassion fatigue is a feeling of tiredness and burnout that arises in individuals because of their work, as a result of exposure to trauma for a fairly long time. This study aims to describe the level of compassion fatigue in nurses that working in mental hospitals. The population used in this study were nurses working in psychiatric hospitals which the total is unknown. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling with a sample size of 141 respondents. The measuring instrument used was a modification of the compassion fatigue scale by Adams, Figley, and Boscarino (2007), with a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.890 for the secondary trauma aspect and 0.930 for the job burnout aspect. The data analysis technique used was descriptive statistical analysis. Based on the descriptive statistical analysis, 78 (55.3%) of the study respondents experienced low compassion fatigue. Several factors that contributed to low compassion fatigue in nurses included the fact that most of the study respondents had coping mechanisms, had worked for 0-5 years, and felt few psychological factors. The researchers also found that nurses who worked in acute/chronic rooms, were unmarried, and did not have children had lower levels of compassion fatigue. Additionally, nurses who work in mental hospitals are known to be more susceptible to job burnout than secondary trauma.
