Abstract

Transformer oil is one of the liquid insulating materials, with the main components of transformer oil involving hydrocarbon elements or compounds, including paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic hydrocarbons. Contaminants in transformer oil can cause impurities. The addition of phenol and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) can reduce the contaminant content. Research was conducted to determine the benefits and measure the effectiveness of using phenol and BHT in purifying and improving the quality of used transformer oil. This research was carried out through a literature study and testing of transformer oil samples that were supplemented with phenol and the antioxidant Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT). The results of the test found that phenol additives are able to improve the quality of the oil sample, while the addition of Butylated Hydroxtoulene (BHT) can improve the transformer oil, so that it can improve the color of the used transformer oil to be clearer and make the breakdown voltage value of the transformer oil better. The increase in the breakdown voltage value which was previously 8.8kV increased the quality of the oil as the breakdown voltage reached 86% or 16.4kV of the original used transformer oil while the increase in color clarity reached 67% of the original transformer oil.
