Abstract

Background: Plaque control is an effort to remove and prevent the accumulation of plaque on the tooth surface, one of these efforts is by gargling. At this time, to control plaque can use natural or synthetic ingredients as an anti-microbial materials, these honey solution can be used as natural ingredients. Aim: This study was to observe the difference between plaque index before and after gargling with honey 15% solution in students at SMPN 17 Palembang. Method: This study using quasi experimental methods consists of before and after gargling honey solution group as many as 60 people who were in accordance with the inclusion criteria. On the first day, plaque was examined using the Loe and Sillnes plaque index, then subject was given with honey 15% solution to rinse for 30 seconds. The process of rinsing with honey 15% solution was completed after 4 days. On the fourth day, the plaque was measured again. Data were analyzed by Paired t-test. Results: Statistic analysis test result showed that there was a significant difference between dental plaque score before and after gargling with Sumbawa original honey 15% solution with p-value = 0,000 < α(0,05). Conclusion: There was a decrease in the plaque index in students at SMPN 17 Palembang after gargling with honey 15% solution.
