Abstract

The development of technology has changed human life, which today cannot be separated from the influence of technology, especially regarding information and communication, one of which is the existence of social media. Through social media, humans can get to know various phenomena that are being discussed, one of which is for teenage girls, namely about certain styles of dress. This research aims to understand and analyse the dressing style of teenage girls in Pendopo Talang Ubi, Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir Regency on social media Instagram. This research uses Herbert Mead's theory of Symbolic Interactionism and Peter L. Berger's theory of the Construction of Social Reality, descriptive qualitative research method, and phenomenological approach. Data collection methods were carried out in several ways: observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation based on purposive sampling techniques. Based on the research that has been conducted, the phenomenon of using the dressing style of teenage girls in Pendopo Talang Ubi, Abab Lematang Ilir Regency is closely related and influenced by the existence of social media Instagram. Furthermore, this is interpreted based on 2 theoretical perspectives used in the research: in Herbert Mead's Symbolic Interactionism, it is interpreted the dressing style as a social symbol, as a self-reflection, and as a shaper of identity; while in the Peter L. Berger’s Construction of Social Reality is interpreted the dressing style as a self-image, as the shaping of norms, and as a social standard. The positive impacts of the phenomenon are developing self-confidence and creativity, developing relationships and popularity, and gaining profits. Meanwhile, the negative impacts of the phenomenon are social pressure, cyberbullying/bullying on the internet, and consumptive behaviour.
