Abstract

This study analyzes Amnesty Internasional’s strategies in advocating for human rights in response to cases of extrajudicial killings in Venezuela during the period of 2017 – 2021. Utilizing the Transnational Advocacy Network (TAN) approach, Amnesty International fostered global solidarity and influenced international actors through four key strategies: information politics, symbolic politics, leverage politics, and accountability politics. Amnesty International implemented information politics by disseminating credible information to expose cases of extrajudicial killings in Venezuela. Through symbolic politics, Amnesty International highlighted emblematic cases with strong visuals and narratives, capturing global attention and empathy. The organization also utilized leverage politics to build alliances with more powerful international actors, enabling the application of sanctions and the initiation of investigations against the Venezuelan government. Additionally through accountability politics, Amnesty International advocated for investigations and prosecutions of Venezuelan officials involved in human rights violations. The implications of this study underline the importance of combining TAN strategies with localized approaches to create more substantial impacts. This research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of human rights advocacy in Venezuela and the challenges faced in combating systematic violations.
