Abstract

The global environmental issues are becoming increasingly urgent, prompting countries to transition to renewable energy as a sustainable solution to the challenges posed by climate change. This research examines the reasons and comparisons of bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Japan, as well as between Indonesia and China, in the development of renewable energy, specifically Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). Utilizing a descriptive qualitative methodology, this study reveals that such cooperation is influenced by mutually beneficial economic interests and complex political dynamics. Japan, as a country with advanced technology, plays a crucial role in knowledge transfer and industrial capacity development, while China, as a global leader in the electric vehicle market, offers extensive access to international markets and innovations in production. This research applies the international cooperation theory proposed by Keohane and Nye, focusing on four key aspects: actors in cooperation, common interests, the principle of reciprocity, and future prospects. The findings indicate that this cooperation not only enables Indonesia to strengthen its position as a key player in the electric vehicle industry but also provides opportunities for Japan and China to expand their economic and political influence in Southeast Asia.
