Abstract

Background: career can be defined as progress and progress in life, occupation, position and so on. There are various factors that can be grouped into two groups in a career selection. The first group includes internal influences such as intellectual ability, interests, talents, motivation, gender, and attitudes toward a variety of occupations. The second group includes external influences such as teacher influence, parental influence, and peer group influences. The family is the smallest unity in society but occupies a prime and fundamental position. Family factors have an important role for an individual, especially a parent because it is the first environment for an individual in one's personal growth and development. The majority of medical students feel that parents have a strong influence on their career choices, others choose their career choices with their parents. Whereas, most non-medical groups make their own choices. Parental support has been recognized as an important factor in improving the confidence and career planning of children. Methods: This study is an observational analytic study using design cross sectional. Samples taken using random sampling. The data collected in this study is the primary data obtained from the questionnaire or questionnaire. In this study selected questionnaires with Likert scale model to arrange the scale of influence of parent support. The sample of this research is the students of Medical Faculty Study Program of Faculty of Medicine, University of Sriwijaya force of 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. The data were analyzed by independent t-test. Results: There was no significant correlation between parent age and support of career election of children with p = 0,679. Meanwhile, there is a significant correlation between parent education level and support of career election of children with p = 0,003 and there is significant relation between parent work and support of career election of child with p = 0,000. Conclusion: There is an influence between the level of parental education and the parent's work on the support of a child's career selection.
